70 O‘ahu high school students completed hands-on

70 O‘ahu high school students completed hands-on hospitality training in the ClimbHI AHP Exposureship at the Made in Hawai‘i Festival program. Students came from Farrington High School, Kapolei High School, Kapolei Charter School, DreamHouse Ewa Beach, and the Kalani High School Special Education Program. The Exposureship culminated with a special event at Farrington High School, where students presented final projects to Hawai‘i business leaders, who also participated in a Hiring Blitz with students. The Hiring Blitz, reimagines and streamlines a typical career fair to expedite the hiring process.

Through the Exposureship the students supported this year’s record-setting Made in Hawaii Festival, serving as trained and certified volunteers, helping tens of thousands of attendees in all aspects of the event’s operations. They also earned their ClimbHI Service Excellence Certificate, which was developed in partnership with Cornell University for the Hawai‘i Department of Education Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, providing a valuable tool for resume building and future job interviews.

Exposureships provide students with connections to local businesses and hands-on training as they develop their resumes and career plan.

More than 550 college and high school students converged on the Hawaii Convention Center as part of the 12th Annual Leadership, Exploration, Inspiration (LEI) hospitality industry program on O’ahu.

The free program, held in partnership with the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) and Hawai‘i Department of Education (HIDOE), and wraps up a series of statewide LEI events, following LEI Maui at the Fairmont Kea Lani on April 4, LEI Hawai‘i Island from April 9-10 at The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, and LEI Kaua‘i on April 16 at the Sheraton Kauai Resort. We are so grateful to all who participated this year!

LEI Kaua’i brought together over 150 students at the Sheraton Kauai Resort for the Leadership, Exploration and Inspiration (LEI) program. The event included involvement from James Tokioka, Director of the State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), Ronald Kouchi, President of the Hawai‘i State Senate, Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami, and Mufi Hannemann, HTA Board Chair.

Statewide our LEI program will host more than 1,000 students and 100 businesses are expected to participate in the program’s 12th year. In 2023 LEI hosted nearly 725 students from 31 high schools and seven colleges, with 35 hotel visits and 119 Exposure Fair participants.

Hawai‘i Students Show Heart this Valentine’s Day With Red Cross Training at Kapolei Charter School...

On Valentine's Day, @climbhi808 and the American Red Cross of Hawai'i collaborated to provide training and certification in Adult First Aid/CPR/AED to 60 students from Kapolei Charter School. The training was conducted by the Red Cross with the assistance with other high school students from Hawaii.

ClimbHI hosts first career exposure event for 600 West Hawai‘i students

Hawaiʻi workforce development nonprofit ClimbHI partnered with West Hawai‘i high schools and businesses to host the first-ever West Hawai‘i Exposure Fair on Hawai‘i Island from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday at The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, reimagining and transforming the hiring process.

Over 600 students attended from schools across West Hawai‘i, including Kohala High School, Konawaena High School, West Hawai‘i Explorations Academy, Ke Kula O Ehunuikaimalino and Honoka‘a High School.

“Exposure Fairs are more effective than typical career fairs due in part to the ‘speed-dating’ style that leads to participants uncovering more opportunities. Businesses also benefit from dedicated time with participants by sharing career paths that lead to economic self-sufficiency here in our islands,” said Julie Morikawa, president of ClimbHI. “By exposing students to high-quality careers with a clear progression plan well before graduation, we are helping them understand the requirements and experience needed to begin their path to success.”

Polynesian Adventure Tours and Roberts Hawai‘i provided transportation, while The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort provided space for the event.

On Dec. 1, ClimbHI hosted its first-ever O‘ahu Exposure Fair at James B. Castle High School for over 1,000 students grades 9-12 and 92 teachers. In April, ClimbHI hosted a Hiring Blitz for 74 Honoka‘a High and Intermediate School seniors, serving as a successful pilot for future events across the state.

ClimbHI nonprofit goes on hiring blitz

Local workforce development nonprofit ClimbHI is launching hiring blitzes and other new opportunities that connect Hawaii students with Hawaii employers.
ClimbHI held a pilot hiring blitz in April where 74 Honokaa High and Intermediate School seniors networked with industry leaders in finance, health care, aviation, trades, retail and hospitality.
For many positions, the hiring blitz condensed the timeline to one day, rather than weeks or months. ClimbHI President Julie Morikawa, who founded ClimbHI more than a decade ago, said in a statement, “We are reimagining and streamlining the hiring process in an effort to create greater connections between local
businesses and students. Importantly, we are linking students up with career paths that offer economic self-sufficiency with a clear
progression plan.”
MORIKAWA said the success of the pilot will allow ClimbHI to reach schools and businesses throughout the state so students can more easily and equitably access high-quality opportunities, and businesses can tap into an engaged workforce. It’s just one of several new initiatives launched this year as ClimbHI works to redefine workforce development as a comprehensive solutions provider for students, schools and businesses.
Morikawa says businesses are already seeing results.
In the days following the pilot hiring blitz, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel hosted nine Honokaa, Hilo and Kohala high school seniors, eight of whom were hired the same day across a variety
of departments, from food and beverage to engineering. Students were also hired across several other
companies.
Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Human Resources Manager Kekai Edayan said in a statement, “We are changing
the traditional hiring model to meet the needs of all students with amazingly positive results.”
